Walter and Eilien Small Wescott Family Tree

Walter and Eilien Wescott lived in Essex Center, Vermont.  They owned a boarding house called Twin Maples.  Eilien did most of the work, and was known for being a good cook.  Her recipe for muffins is included in a cookbook put together by the Essex Community Historical Society.  I’ve been told that Walter spent most of his time ‘guarding’ the front porch from his rocking chair. 

Walter and Eilien had two children, my grandfather Vernon, and Robert, known as Uncle Bob.

When my parents, Vernon Jr and Mary, were married in April of 1951,  Uncle Bob, his second wife Florence, and Great Grandma Eilien, were at the wedding, by grand coincidence.  The three of them were on their way from Bob’s home in Los Angeles to Tijuana, and stopped by to see my Dad.  They had no idea there was a wedding happening that day!  My Mom answered the door at her parents house, and Uncle Bob asked, “Do you know where Juny is?”  My mother answered, “Yes, he’s in the bathtub!”

Juny was the nickname his family had given my Dad, as he was Vernon Wescott, Junior.  According to my Mom, he hated that name.  

 In 1960, I was fortunate to meet Uncle Bob, his wife, and Great Grandma Eilien when my family visited them, and had dinner at Uncle Bob’s house in Tujunga.  Eilien was visiting from Vermont.  I was about eight years old. 

I met my grandfather Vernon Wescott, Sr., “Pop,” just once.  He and Nana flew out to San Diego from Connecticut for a visit.  I barely remember this, and my siblings, being much younger, don’t remember this visit at all.  I do remember we took them to the San Diego Zoo. 

In 1975, I and my girlfriend, wife-to-be, visited family in Connecticut, and stayed with Nana for a week.  We got to meet most of my dad’s family, except for Aunt Aunt Eilien’s family, who were all in Florida.
