John A. Wescott Sr, Descendant of Nicholas Westcott III, and Stukely Westcott
John A. Westcott, 4ggrandfather
3/31/2023 I made a major discovery today: John’s middle name is Albert. For decades, based on the handwritten death record, I believed his middle initial was P, with no idea what that might stand for. I know believe his middle name was Albert, and he was John Albert Westcott Sr. Several sources led me to this conclusion, one being the US Census of 1880 for Fairfield, listing he and his wife living with his son, John A. Westcott Jr.
John A. Westcott was my 4th ggrandfather. His birthplace is unknown, however he and all of his siblings have their births recorded as ‘delayed certificates’ in Rutland County, Vermont. He married Abigail Rich, b. 1809, probably born in Rutland County, Vermont. According to the death record of John, his parents were Nicholas and Abigail Westcott, of Rutland. This death record provides the first and only lead I have so far on the parents of John.
This connection was enough to have me admitted as a regular member of the Society of Stukely Westcott Descendants of America, the only organization I am aware of with regard to the surnames Wescott or Westcott.
In 2000, I found the final resting places of John and Abigail and their son Davis and daughter Polly, all in the Egypt Cemetery of East Fairfield, Franklin County, Vermont. Davis died at the age 25 of an unknown illness, while serving in the Vermont Volunteers, 12th Infantry Regiment, Company E; Polly was buried as a Westcott, at age 30. Given these facts, I believe neither Davis nor Polly produced descendants. Their brother and my 3rd ggrandfather Hiram Nichols Wescott enlisted in the Vermont Volunteers with brother Davis on September 1, 1862, and was discharged for disability on April 25, 1863.
On the same 2000 trip, I also visited the cemetery of St. George, Chittenden County, and found the grave sites of Hiram, his wife Eilien, and her parents and family.
John A. Westcott Jr.. the last child of John and Abigail, married and later moved just across the Canadian border to Glen Sutton, Quebec, and I have some of his descendants documented, thanks to an Internet friend.
In 2008, I finally made contact with not one but TWO descendants of John A. Westcott, truly a banner year!
Years of genealogical research had me blocked at my 4ggrandfather, John P. Westcott. I had solid evidence supporting my connection to him, however could find nothing on his parents. When my cousin bought and sent me “History and genealogy of the ancestors and some descendants of Stukely Westcott : one of the thirteen original proprietors of Providence Plantation and the colony of Rhode Island , by Roscoe L. Whitman,” my 4grandfather John P. Westcott was nowhere to be found among the thousands Stukely Westcott descendants recorded. Curiously, there was a 15 year gap in the family in which he should be listed:
256. Nicholas Wescott III (Nicholas5 Westcott, Nicholas4, Josiah3, Jeremiah2, Stukely1), b. circa 1774 in Rhode Island; married Abigail circa 1793; died before 1820 in Vermont. Abigail was born circa 1774. (Childrens births in Clarendon records “recorded March 26th, 1806 attested byJnO Hills, Town Clerk.”)
Children of Nicholas Wescott III and Abigail include:
1. Hepsibah Westcott, b. 4 Aug 1794
2. Job Prescott Wescott, b. 20 Jun 1796; married Sarah Manley; married Rachel Billings.
3. Nicholas Westcott Jr., b. 29 Jan 1799 in Clarendon, Rutland Co., VT; married Nabby Gibson; married Phebe Hines.
4. Lovice Wescott, b. 27 Feb 1801.
5. Josias Wescott, b. 19 May 1803; died 10 Jan 1872
6. Jeremiah Wescott, b. 19 Jul 1805.
Here is the gap where my ancestor John A. Westcott was born, in 1807, according to his death certificate, listing his parents as Nicholas and Abigail Westcott of Rutland, VT.
7. Abner Wescott, b. 1 Jan 1819; married Dimice Reed; married Belinda Herrington.
Then, pay dirt: on a visit to the Vermont Department of Vital Statistics in 2009, I found the death certificate for John P. Westcott, and it listed his parents as Nicholas and Abigail Westcott! It was an “Aha!” moment, one I won’t forget. Finally, after years of searching, I had evidence of the next generation back. This was just enough to secure my membership in the Stukely Westcotts Descendants of America. However, it was still only one document, and given the fact that my ancestor was missing from The Big Red Book, I wanted further confirmation.
John Westcott and Abigail Rich had four children: Davis, Polly, Hiram and John.
Davis and Hiram enlisted for the Civil War on September 1, 1862, and were mustered into the Twelfth Regiment, Vermont Infantry, Company E on October 4, 1862. Davis was 24 years old, and Hiram was 18. After Davis died from disease on April 20, 1863, Hiram was released from duty on April 25, 1863 and returned home. I believe Davis and Polly had no children.
John, the youngest, moved to Canada around 1889, to Glen Sutton, Monteregie Region, Quebec.
